NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY CONVOCATION WEEKEND 2011

Dear Member of Convocation,

As Chair of Convocation it gives me great pleasure to invite you to join us at Convocation Weekend 2011.

This special weekend welcomes all our former students back to campus, providing you with an opportunity to revisit and re-engage with the University, reconnect with friends and staff and understand the latest developments at Newcastle.

Convocation Weekend 2011 offers a packed weekend programme commencing on Friday 17th June and with a whole variety of academic and social activities for you to choose from or for you to build your own activities around. Get in touch with old friends and use the weekend as the perfect excuse for a night on the Toon!

This year we are also partnering with the highly popular EAT www.eatnewcastlegateshead.com and VAMOS www.vamosfestival.com Festivals which provide further outstanding opportunities for a thoroughly stimulating weekend with great food and culture.

The weekend kicks off on Friday with a Business School panel debate “Going for Growth” on the prospects for balancing the economy amidst public spending cuts. This promises to be a lively discussion with confirmed speakers including Sir Ian Wrigglesworth and Paul Walker.

Saturday morning will see the University campus open and ready to welcome graduates and friends of the University from around the world. We’re excited to announce that no fewer than 18 schools are taking part this year, all of which have prepared stimulating events, talks & debates that can be enjoyed with complimentary refreshments.

A tour highlighting the latest campus changes will be followed by a complimentary lunch at the Courtyard including a presentation on the Union building development which is nearing completion. For the more sporting minded a pulsating Alumni football match is scheduled for Brunton Park with a 1.00 pm kick-off.

Highlights of the afternoon include the annual meeting of Convocation. Convocation is the statutory body that represents all alumni and ensures that your views and ideas are understood by the University. Convocation provides alumni with an opportunity to discuss matters of current interest and hear the Vice Chancellors report on the latest activities and developments at the University. This year we have seen the subject of University funding and the issues of tuition fees at the top of the public agenda. This is your opportunity to ask questions or air your views on these and any other matter. If for any reason you cannot make it but want to register a question please contact me by Email ChairofConvocation@ncl.ac.uk and I will arrange for your question to be raised with the appropriate member of the Executive Board.

This year we also have elections for the Alumni Consultative Group (ACG). The candidates profiles are now available on www.ncl.ac.uk/alumni and you can vote (you each have eight votes) up to the deadline of the 10th June in order to make sure that the election is as representative as possible. The new Chair and Vice Chair of ACG will then be elected at Convocation on the 18th June so come along and ensure your vote counts! This will be followed by what we are sure will be a very thought provoking public lecture delivered by architect and graduate Mr Jeremy Blake
